Singapore Artist
Lim Tze Peng 林子平
Lim Tze Peng was born on September 28 1921. He had no formal training in the art except for Chinese Calligraphy . However his passion and desire to paint was so strong that he resigned from his school teacher job in the 1980s to paint full-time. Lim Tze Peng’s focus was to paint the disappearing face of old Singapore. He spent his days along the alleyways and corners of Chinatown and parts of Singapore capturing our multi-faceted landscape with his bold and distinctive brush strokes.
Lim Tze Peng currently ranks as the oldest second generation artist in Singapore. He has won many prestigious awards, including the National Day Award (1963 & 1981), the Cultural Medallion Award (2003). In 1977, he received a special award at the Commonwealth Art Exhibition in England.
Lim Tze Peng has exhibited widely, including Hong Kong, England, Moscow, Taiwan, Japan, France, Brunei, New York and Singapore.
In May 2012, one of his paintings, Singapore River Scene, was auctioned for HK$620,000 (S$101,800) Christie’s. This set a new benchmark as it was the first time a painting by a living Singaporean artist had crossed the S$100,000 mark.
Lim Tze Peng has published a total of 8 books on his collection of paintings, from 1986 to 2009. He also has many paintings in private and public collections.
