Singapore Artist

Clinton Chan

While pursuing his MBA at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Dr Clinton Chan, a medical doctor by training, found the opportunity to develop his other interest – photography. Under the teaching and mentorship of Joel Leivick, Professor of Photography and Chairman of the Department of Art and Art History at Stanford University, Chan spent two years refining his skills in the art of photo-taking.

Today, Chan has developed a sizable portfolio and held his first solo exhibition in March 2003 : a series of black and white photographs in an exhibition titled: Pulau Ubin- A Portfolio of 18 Landscape Photographs.

Chan draws his philosophy of photography from a range of photographers of the 20th century, in particular Eugene Atget, Robert Adams, William Eggleston and Ray Metzker. He is also influenced by the Taoist philosophy of Chinese Landscape Painting, especially the importance of ‘presence’ in a composition. He has also completed a book project called ‘Living Memories’, on student volunteers and their work with US war veterans in Veterans’ Hospitals.
