Lim Leong Seng 林龍成

Lim Leong Seng is a well-known Singaporean painter and sculptor. He is versatile and knowledgeable in the use of different mediums like bronze, steel, collage and mixed media. His artworks range from depiction of Singapore’s prominent individuals, to the more abstract and symbolic representation of
unity.

Brought up in the 1950s, he was under the guidance of Buddhist Master Venerable ‘Zhumo’ at the age of 18 and trained in Chinese painting and Buddhist studies. In 1971, he graduated from the Baharuddin Vocation Institute. He became a member of the Singapore Modern Art Society in 1977, and was elected as the President of the society in 2001.

In the 1980s, he spearheaded a series of large scale commissioned work titled The Spirit of Kallang, which gained him a reputation as a promising local sculptor. Leong Seng continued to receive his artistic guidance under Professor Itipol Thangchalok of Silpakkorn University in Thailand. In 2001, he worked together with the Singapore Tourism Board to re-enact historical Singapore scenes. To date, he had completed over 20 public commissioned works.

Lim Leong Seng has held many solo exhibitions and group exhibitions in Southeast Asia, Taiwan, Japan, Paris, London and Belgium. He won the Grand Prize in MCI Art Competition in 1990, Second Prize in REDAS Building Sculpture Competition (International) in 1993, Jurors’ Choice in Philip Morris Group of Companies Singapore Art Awards in 1997 and also the Tan Tsze Chor Art Award (Gold) in 1997.
